Location

All Loophole of Retreat events will take place at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in the Venetian lagoon [Cini].

Check in

Only Eventbrite ticket holders will be admitted. To expedite your initial admission, print or be ready to present your ticket on your mobile device to enter the Cini. Once through the main entrance you will proceed to registration tables in alphabetical order by first name to check in and receive your wristband, which will grant you access for all three days of the symposium.

If you need your ticket confirmation re-sent, or have any questions regarding your registration, please contact loopholeofretreatvenice@gmail.com as soon as possible and before your arrival to Venice for a timely response.

Getting to Cini

Please note that FFP2/KN95 masks are mandatory on all public transportation.

There will be a free dedicated Loophole of Retreat shuttle boat to bring participants and attendees to and from the Fondazione Cini on Oct. 7, 8, and 9 in the morning and at the close of programming each day. The shuttle boat will depart approximately every 10 minutes from a dedicated dock at Approdo Cornoldi at the following times:

Friday, Oct. 7 and Saturday, Oct. 8: 8:30–10:30am and 6–7pm
Sunday, Oct. 9:  8:30–10:30am and 12:30–2pm

At all other times:
Take the ACTV public Vaporetto(waterbus) Line 2 from San Zaccaria to San Giorgio (1 stop). Appx 3 min. This waterbus runs every 12 minutes. Tickets are 9.50€

OR: Schedule a private water taxi through your hotel. Advance booking required. Fares start from 70€

Meals

Food vendors will be open throughout the program for attendees to purchase refreshments and meals including vegan and gluten-free options October 7–9 at the Fondazione Cini.

Streaming and Documentation

The entire program will be live-streamed and then posted online following the event’s conclusion. The website will be updated with links for streaming.

Tickets to the Venice Biennale

Loophole tickets do not include access to the Venice Biennale, of which Simone Leigh’s exhibition at the U.S. Pavilion is a part. Biennale tickets can be purchased here or on-site at the Arsenale and Giardini entrances.

The Biennale is open Tues–Sun from 10am–6pm. Please note that the Biennale is closed Mondays so will not be available for visiting on Oct. 10.

Travel and Accommodations

Travel tips

— Given pervasive issues with checked luggage, we advise that attendees bring only carry-on luggage.

— Please note that FFP2/KN95 masks are mandatory on all public transportation.

— Venice is a city designed largely for walking and the streets are made of stone, which can be uneven. Please pack comfortable footwear. Walking in heels can be difficult.

— The weather in Venice in October is temperate with an average high of 65F and low of 50F. Please be prepared for the possibility of rain.

— Keep an eye on your personal items at all times.

— Please stay up to date on current Covid policies in Italy

Arriving to Venice

Those traveling by air should plan to fly into Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) or Venice Treviso Airport (TSF).

Those traveling by trains should plan to arrive to Venezia Santa Lucia Station.

We do not recommend planning to travel to Venice by car.

Airport Transfers

The options for getting from Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) to Venice city center include: private water taxi, public boat (Alilaguna), and taxi or public bus from the airport to Piazzale Roma, where you can connect to the vaporetto (ACTV public water bus) system of Venice. Details for each option are below.

TAXI BOAT

Taxi boats are available at Airport docks. Single fares up to 4 people start from 110€, depending on the category of the taxi (standard, executive).

ALILAGUNA BOATS

A water bus transport service provided by Alilaguna is available from the airport dock. Tickets can be purchased online, inside the terminal, and at the docks.

Single ticket 15€, return ticket 27€. Travel time dependent on destination

BY TAXI CAR

Taxi cars leave from the platform outside the terminal.

Fixed fare to Venice Piazzale Roma is 40€. Approx 20 min travel time.

From Piazzale Roma, take the ACTV public water bus to the stop nearest your accommodations

BY PUBLIC BUS TRANSPORT

ACTV line 5 or ATVO VENEZIA EXPRESS leave from the platform outside the terminal to Venice Piazzale Roma. Single fare 8€. Approx 20–30 min travel time.

From Piazzale Roma, take the ACTV public water bus to the stop nearest your accommodations

The options for getting from Venice Treviso Airport (TSF) to Venice city center include: ATVO bus, Barzi transfer service, or taxi, which will bring you to Piazzale Roma. More information can be found here. From Piazzale Roma, take the ACTV public water bus to the stop nearest your accommodations.
